Cisco Secure Equipment Access

Secure Equipment Access lets operators, maintenance contractors and machine builders reach the industrial assets they look after, and nothing else, without a VPN or a remote access box on the plant floor.

In short: Cisco Secure Equipment Access is zero trust remote access for operational technology. A cloud portal authenticates users and grants least-privilege, time-limited sessions to specific assets, while gateway software runs on Cisco industrial switches and routers. It is now part of Cisco Cyber Vision, and SEA Advantage comes with Cyber Vision Advantage.

What is Cisco Secure Equipment Access?

Remote access is one of the biggest risks in OT. Machine builders, integrators and in-house engineers all need to reach PLCs, HMIs and drives, and over the years many sites have collected a mix of shared VPN accounts, always-on remote desktop tools and 4G routers fitted by suppliers. Each one is a route in that IT may not know about.

Secure Equipment Access (SEA) replaces those routes with a zero trust model. Access is denied by default, and each user is granted only the assets, protocols and time windows they need. Cisco now describes SEA as the secure remote access part of Cisco Cyber Vision, its industrial security platform, and Cisco's Secure Equipment Access page states that SEA is now part of Cyber Vision.

How it works

  • Cloud portal: acts as the ZTNA trust broker. It authenticates remote users, applies identity and context-based policy and brokers each session
  • Gateway on your network equipment: the SEA agent runs as an application on selected Cisco industrial switches and industrial routers, and on supported Catalyst enterprise switches, so no extra appliance is needed. Most supported platforms can run the Cyber Vision sensor and the SEA agent side by side, although some industrial routers run only one of the two at a time
  • Outbound-only connections: the gateway connects out to the cloud broker, so assets can be reached without inbound firewall openings or jump hosts in an industrial DMZ, and industrial switches can reach the broker through your own HTTP(S) proxy
  • Central deployment: agents can be activated from the SEA portal, from Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager for industrial routers, or from Cisco Catalyst Center for switches

Key capabilities

  • Clientless access in a web browser for RDP, VNC, HTTP(S), SSH and Telnet
  • SEA Plus: an agent-based IP channel so engineers can use native tools such as PLC programming software
  • Least-privilege policy by user, asset, access method and day and time schedule, grouped into reusable access groups
  • MFA and single sign-on through any SAML 2.0 identity provider, plus device posture checks with Cisco Duo for SEA Plus
  • Approval workflows: users request access to an asset, and approvers assigned to each user group see and decide only the requests meant for them
  • Session control (Advantage): monitor live sessions, join or terminate them, and record them for audit
  • Secure file transfer to and from assets during a session
  • Identity threat alerts for access attempts from new or prohibited locations or at unusual hours, plus role-based administration

Essentials vs Advantage and licensing

SEA is a subscription based on the number of OT assets (endpoints), on one, three, five or seven-year terms, using Cisco Smart Licensing. The licence includes the cloud portal and unlimited SEA agents, and each endpoint licence carries a monthly data allowance that is pooled across your sites and assets.

FeatureSEA EssentialsSEA Advantage

Scheduled access and access groupsYesYes
SSO, MFA and role-based administrationYesYes
Live session monitoring, join and terminateNoYes
Inline session recording (needs your own AWS S3 account)NoYes
Duo posture checks for SEA Plus (needs Duo Advantage)NoYes

Two routes make SEA much easier to justify. Cisco includes SEA Advantage at no extra cost for the same number of endpoints when Cyber Vision Advantage is ordered or renewed on or after 20 August 2025. And Cisco says selected industrial switches ordered with a Network Advantage licence include a limited-term Cyber Vision and SEA Advantage licence for a set number of endpoints at no extra cost, with further endpoints bought separately. We check which applies to your hardware and licences.

For IT users and corporate applications, Cisco's general-purpose zero trust access is Cisco Secure Access with ZTNA. SEA is purpose-built for OT, where the users are often third parties and the targets are machines.

How we help

Forever Systems starts by finding every existing remote access route into your OT network, including the ones suppliers installed. We then:

  1. Confirm which Cisco switches and routers can host the SEA gateway, and whether your Cyber Vision or Network Advantage licences already include SEA.
  2. Connect SEA to your identity provider and set up MFA, with Duo where posture checks are needed.
  3. Build access groups per supplier, site and asset, with schedules and approval steps.
  4. Move each supplier across, then remove the old VPN accounts, remote desktop agents and modems.
  5. Turn on session monitoring and recording for high-risk assets and feed logs to your SIEM.

Pricing depends on endpoints and term, so ask us for a quote. Contact us to secure supplier access to your plant.

How Forever Systems supplies and supports Cisco Secure

We supply and support the whole Cisco security portfolio for UK organisations, alongside Cisco Meraki networking and Cisco voice.

  • Architecture and sizing: the right mix of firewall, secure access, identity, endpoint, email, detection and response and OT security for your estate, whether as individual products or a Cisco security suite
  • Licensing: Smart Accounts, subscription tiers, Enterprise Agreements and renewals, explained in plain English
  • Deployment and migration, including ASA to Secure Firewall Threat Defense, AnyConnect to Secure Client, and Umbrella to Secure Access
  • Integration across Cisco XDR, Splunk, Duo, ISE and Secure Access so products share telemetry and response actions
  • Ongoing support: upgrades, policy reviews, end-of-life planning, licence management and renewals

Forever Systems Ltd is an independent IT and cyber security provider. We will always recommend what fits, Cisco or otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

What is Cisco Secure Equipment Access?

A zero trust remote access service for OT and industrial equipment. A cloud portal authenticates users and grants least-privilege, time-limited sessions to specific assets, through gateway software running on Cisco industrial network equipment.

Is Secure Equipment Access part of Cisco Cyber Vision?

Yes. Cisco now describes it as the secure remote access part of Cyber Vision, and SEA Advantage is included for the same endpoint count with Cyber Vision Advantage ordered or renewed on or after 20 August 2025.

Does Secure Equipment Access need a VPN or extra hardware?

No. The gateway runs on selected Cisco switches and routers and connects outbound to the cloud broker, so you do not need inbound firewall rules, a VPN concentrator or a separate remote access appliance.

Can contractors use their own engineering software?

Yes, with SEA Plus. It creates an IP channel to the permitted assets so engineers can run native tools such as PLC programming software, while browser-based access covers RDP, VNC, SSH, Telnet and web interfaces.

Can sessions be recorded?

Yes, in SEA Advantage. Administrators can watch live sessions, join or end them, and record them inline for audit. Recording needs your own AWS S3 account for storage.
