In short: Cisco Secure Firewall vs Meraki MX comes down to depth versus simplicity. Secure Firewall offers the deepest inspection, policy control, deployment options and scale, managed from Management Center or Security Cloud Control. Meraki MX is managed entirely from the Meraki dashboard, with built-in SD-WAN, and suits multi-site organisations that want simple, cloud-managed branch security.
Two Cisco firewall families
Cisco Secure Firewall (formerly Firepower) is Cisco's enterprise next-generation firewall line, running Threat Defense or ASA software on hardware, virtual and cloud platforms.
Cisco Meraki MX is a cloud-managed security and SD-WAN appliance, configured from the Meraki dashboard alongside Meraki switches and Wi-Fi. Both use Cisco Talos threat intelligence, and both integrate with Cisco XDR and Cisco Secure Access. They are designed for different jobs, and many organisations run both: Secure Firewall at the head office or data centre, Meraki MX at branches.
Side-by-side comparison
| Cisco Secure Firewall | Cisco Meraki MX | |
|---|---|---|
| Management | Management Center (on-premises or virtual), cloud-delivered Management Center in Security Cloud Control, or Device Manager | Meraki dashboard, cloud-only |
| Policy depth | Granular access control, NAT, decryption, identity and IPS policies, with fine-grained Snort 3 tuning | Simpler rule sets and security settings designed for quick, consistent configuration |
| Intrusion prevention | Snort 3 IPS, SnortML, Encrypted Visibility Engine, custom rules | Built-in IDS/IPS using Talos intelligence, with less tuning control |
| Malware and web filtering | Malware Defense with sandboxing; URL Filtering | Malware protection and URL filtering included with the appropriate Meraki licence |
| SD-WAN | SD-WAN features on branch appliances, with route-based and SD-WAN VPN topologies built in Management Center | Built-in SD-WAN and site-to-site VPN, configured from the dashboard |
| Remote access and zero trust | Secure Client VPN and universal ZTNA with Secure Access | Client VPN (L2TP and IKEv2), plus SASE integration with Secure Access |
| Form factors | Branch, campus, data centre, industrial, virtual, public cloud and container | Branch and campus appliances, plus virtual MX in AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Alibaba Cloud and Cisco NFVIS |
| Scale and high availability | Clustering, multi-instance and data centre throughput | Built for many sites rather than very high throughput at one site |
| Monitoring | Detailed event analysis in Management Center, XDR and Splunk | Dashboard monitoring, with ThousandEyes integration for LAN, WAN and application insight |
The detail of each Meraki licence edition changes over time, so we confirm features against Cisco's current documentation when we quote.
When Secure Firewall is the better fit
- Data centre, internet edge or high-throughput sites where inspection performance matters
- Organisations that need fine-grained IPS tuning, decryption policies or detailed forensic events
- Regulated environments that want on-premises management and data, or air-gapped networks
- Industrial and OT networks, using the ruggedised appliance and Cisco Cyber Vision
- Public and private cloud firewalls that must share policy with on-premises firewalls (Threat Defense Virtual)
- Existing ASA estates migrating to Threat Defense
When Meraki MX is the better fit
- Many small sites (shops, surgeries, schools, branch offices) managed by a small IT team
- Organisations already using Meraki switches and Wi-Fi that want one dashboard for everything
- SD-WAN first designs, where resilient multi-link connectivity matters as much as inspection
- Teams that value zero-touch deployment: ship the appliance to site, plug it in, and it pulls its configuration from the cloud

Using both together
A mixed design is common and sensible: Secure Firewall at the head office, data centre or cloud edge, with Meraki MX at branches, all tied together with site-to-site VPN and protected for remote users and internet traffic by Cisco Secure Access, Cisco's security service edge. Adding SD-WAN to Secure Access gives you a Cisco SASE architecture. Security Cloud Control can also manage Meraki MX appliances alongside Secure Firewall, which helps when policy spans both families.
How we help
Forever Group supplies and supports both families, so we have no reason to push one over the other. We look at your sites, traffic, team and compliance needs and recommend the right mix. Contact us for a firewall review.

Contact usFrequently asked questions
Is Meraki MX a next-generation firewall?
Meraki MX includes next-generation features such as application-aware rules, IDS/IPS, URL filtering and malware protection with the appropriate licence, but with less policy depth and tuning than Cisco Secure Firewall.
Is Cisco Secure Firewall better than Meraki?
Neither is better in every case. Secure Firewall offers deeper inspection, more deployment options and higher scale; Meraki MX is simpler to run across many sites and has built-in SD-WAN. The right choice depends on your sites and team.
Can Meraki MX and Cisco Secure Firewall work together?
Yes. They can be linked with standard site-to-site VPN, both use Talos intelligence, and both integrate with Cisco XDR and Cisco Secure Access, so a head-office Secure Firewall and branch Meraki MX appliances are a common design.
Which is easier to manage, Meraki MX or Secure Firewall?
Meraki MX, for most small and mid-sized estates: everything is configured from the Meraki dashboard. Secure Firewall's cloud-delivered Management Center removes the need to run management infrastructure, but it still offers far more settings to learn.
